Loi Krathong is a traditional festival that every tourist love to join when have Thailand tours. After Songkran  festival tradition, Loy Krathong Festival is the 2nd largest festival of the year, and also is one of the most beautiful festival, the oldest and most colorful kingdom of meaningful and contains many elements of the Thai mythology.


Every year the festival is celebrated on the full moon night in December of Thai calendar (around November calendar) throughout Thailand and in some parts of Laos and Myanmar (in Shan State). Latin name of the festival is Loy Krathong or Loi Krathong

In Thai, Loy means “float” krathong is also referring to the raft floating lotus-shaped. Traditionally made from banana leaf krathong or banana trunk or spider lillies. A krathong include food, betel nuts, flowers, incense, candles and coins.


Whether made of nothing, a krathong will be decorative leaves elaborately-folded banana, flowers, candles and incense. A few silver coins retail occasionally placed to rise to the river gods.

During the full moon, Thais float their krathong into rivers, canals or ponds. Many people believe the festival stems from an ancient custom is to show reverence to the gods of the river. Today, this festival is an opportunity to simply have fun.

Loy Krathong festival is held around the country of Thailand, but the biggest is in the 4 provinces of Sukhothai, Chiang Mai, Ayutthaya and Bangkok.
